Open up more room to play.
Both apps have been adapted for the way iPhone Duo changes shape. The games use layouts designed to fit the screen when folded and unfolded, giving children more space to explore on the larger display.
- Layouts that fit: the activities adapt to the available screen space as you fold or unfold the device.
- A larger play area: open Duo to give letters, shapes and game pieces more room, with space to look and play together.
- Keep your place: move between folded and unfolded layouts while continuing the activity you’re playing.
For Phonics for Kids, that means more room for letter sounds and word-building activities. In Halloween Monster Preschool, it opens up the classroom for colour, shape, number and letter games.
Where shall we start?
Pick what interests your child.
The best starting point is an activity your child wants to try. These two apps offer different kinds of practice.
01 · Phonics for Kids
Little sounds become first words.
If your child is starting to notice letters or trying to read simple words, Phonics for Kids gives you a playful way to practise together. The app teaches English, with an English-language interface.
On iPhone Duo: the redesigned layout fits the folded and unfolded screens, with a larger play area for letters and first words when Duo is open.
- Hear letter sounds: listen, repeat and revisit a familiar sound.
- Match sounds to letters: hear a sound and choose its written letter.
- Build and recognise words: bring sounds together and practise reading familiar words.
Try it together: choose one familiar sound, listen to it in the app, then find something nearby that starts with the same sound. If your child is at school, follow the sounds they are learning there.

02 · Halloween Monster Preschool
A friendly classroom full of discoveries.
For a child who enjoys matching, sorting and spotting familiar shapes, Halloween Monster Preschool offers colourful activities with pumpkins, ghosts and fairy friends. It is designed for ages 2–5, and the games can be enjoyed throughout the year.
On iPhone Duo: the classroom layout adapts as you fold and unfold, making use of the larger display to give matching and sorting activities more room.
- Colours and shapes: choose crayons and tap shapes with matching outlines.
- Numbers from 1 to 10: drag numbered books onto matching shelf spaces.
- Letter matching: spot the balloon with the same letter as the classroom board.
Try it together: take turns choosing a colour, then look for that colour around the room. You can carry on away from the screen with our Halloween learning activity ideas.

For their grown-ups
Make a little time to play together.
On a shared iPhone Duo, let your child choose an activity and take turns tapping, listening and talking about what you notice. Start with one game and stop when their interest fades. There is no need to complete every activity in a sitting.
Before handing over your phone, check the app’s store listing and your device’s purchase settings. Download the latest available app update so you have the current version.
